No baby shower for first time mom?

Hey all. My husband and I are expecting our first child, but unfortunately both his and my family live several states away. They are going to be there for the birth, but I've decided not to throw a shower so they won't feel pressured into coming into town twice. Is it inappropriate to send out some type of baby announcements with registry info enclosed? If so, should I send out the announcements maybe 2-3 weeks before the due date?
