Why is it important to run a virus scan in safe mode rather than just regular mode?

every time my computer has a virus, my bf always make me scan my computer in safe mode...but he wouldnt tell me why, so I"m hoping I can get the answer from someone else. It would really help me to know this. I thank you in advance!
